Interracial Dating

It wasn’t until 1967 that mixed marriage in the United States became law--primarily between African Americans and Whites--but in the forty years since that historic date, both interracial dating and marriage have exploded. Why? First, the sheer numbers of minority groups have all increased. The Census Bureau estimates that by the year 2050, Whites, for the first time, will become a minority group themselves. Second, despite long-held racial prejudices among Whites, attitudes are changing. Third, the prominence of Hollywood couples in the media, TV shows and films, have all said, "Interracial matchups are very cool."

From 1980 to 2000, the number of mixed marriages has doubled to about 1.46 million, representing nearly 3% of all marriages. A study by Dr. Diana Norcross at Loyola University found that college students' attitudes toward mixed relationships are much more accepting than those of their parents. Nevertheless as more dating and marriage occur, family members are discovering that their old stereotypes of what an ethnic person should be are flat out wrong.
